Why Polishing Epoxy Resin is Important

Polishing epoxy resin has many benefits.

First, polished epoxy resin looks good. The high gloss, mirror-like finish catches the attention of your guests.
Plus, a smooth and glossy finish enhances the color and clarity of the resin, making it more vibrant and appealing.

Additionally, a polished surface is also more durable, resistant to scratches and wear, and easier to clean.

Before You Start the Polishing Process

Most importantly, always choose the best epoxy resin on your projects.

Before you start polishing your epoxy resin, you need to make sure that it’s fully cured and hardened.

Depending on the type and brand of epoxy resin you’re using, this can take from 24 hours to several days.
Check the manufacturer’s instructions for the recommended curing time and conditions.

Also, make sure that the resin is free of any debris, dust, or fingerprints.
You can use a soft cloth or a lint roller to remove any particles that may have settled on the surface.

Avoid using any abrasive cleaners or tack cloths as these may damage the resin surface.

So, lets get started with a list of my favorite tools and material to polish epoxy resin.

Tools and Materials

To polish epoxy resin, you’ll need some basic tools and materials.

Polishing Compound
Random Orbital Polisher
Dust Mask and Goggles

The tools and material I use to sand and polish epoxy resin comprise a system.
While the system isn’t necessary to achieve great results, it does allow me to sand epoxy resin and polish epoxy resin with a single system.

Moreover, this system can be used to finish epoxy wood tables in various ways.

Polishing Compound 5010
Orange Polishing Sponge
Polishing Compound 9010
Blue Sponge
Polishing Compound 11010
White Sponge
Sheepskin Buffing Pad
Sandpaper

Orbital Sander

A random orbital sander is a handheld power tool that sands in a random orbit action, creating irregular overlapping circles.

Essentially, this tool allows you to sand rough wood or a delicate resin piece by using finer grits of sandpaper discs.
Moreover, some orbital sanders also work as a polishing machine.

The random sanding action ensures no single part of the abrasive material travels the same path twice during the same rotation, which results in a tool that does not leave swirl marks and is not sensitive to the direction of the wood grain.

Sandpaper

You’ll need fine grit sandpaper in various grits, from coarse to fine, to remove any imperfections, scratches, or rough spots on the resin.
Depending on your sanding technique and preference, wet sandpaper, waterproof sandpaper, or dry sandpaper can be used.

As a quick tip, wet sand smaller objects such as jewelry and dry sand large objects such as a table.
In my opinion, the best way to get desired results is dry sanding.

Polishing compound

A polishing paste or compound is a special paste or liquid that contains fine abrasive particles that help to get a smooth surface on epoxy resin.

You can find polishing compounds in hardware stores, automotive stores, or online.
There are several types of polish that work well on epoxy resin.

One popular option is a liquid polish, which is applied with a soft cloth and then buffed to a high shine.
Another option is a paste polish, which is applied with a polishing pad and then buffed to a high shine.
Wax-based polishes are also commonly used for epoxy resin, as they provide a protective layer that helps to prevent scratches and fading.

Buffing wheel

A buffing wheel is a circular tool that attaches to a drill or a rotary tool and spins at high speed.
You’ll use the buffing wheel to apply the polishing compound to the resin and buff it to a high shine.

Protective gear

Polishing epoxy resin can create dust and debris that can be harmful if inhaled or ingested.
Make sure to wear protective gear, such as a mask, goggles, and gloves, to prevent any health risks.

Step-by-Step Guide: How to Polish Epoxy Resin

Now that you have all the tools and materials you need, let’s get started with the step-by-step guide to polishing epoxy resin:

Step 1: Sanding

The first step to polish epoxy resin is sanding resin with coarse sandpaper to remove any imperfections, bumps, or uneven spots.

Start with a grit of around 120 or 150 and sand the resin gently, using a circular motion.
Make sure to sand evenly and avoid applying too much pressure, as this can create new scratches or damage the resin.

Once you’ve sanded the entire surface with coarse sandpaper, switch to a finer grit, such as 320 or 400, and repeat the process.
This will help to smooth out the surface and remove any scratches left by the previous grit.

Keep sanding with progressively finer grits until you reach a grit of around 1000 or 1500.

Step 2: Washing and Drying

After sanding, wash the resin with soap and water to remove any dust or debris.

Rinse thoroughly and dry with a clean microfiber cloth or a hair dryer.
Make sure that the resin is completely dry before proceeding to the next step.

Step 3: Applying Polishing Compound

Now it’s time to apply the polishing compound to the resin.

You can use a polishing cloth, a buffing pad, or a buffing wheel, depending on your preference.
Apply a small amount of polishing compound to the surface of the resin and spread it evenly with the cloth or the pad.

Start buffing the resin with the buffing wheel, using a low speed at first to avoid splattering the compound.
Move the wheel in circular motions and apply gentle pressure.

Gradually increase the speed and pressure as you buff, but be careful not to overheat the resin or damage it.

Step 4: Buffing and Finishing

Continue buffing the resin with the polishing compound until you achieve the desired level of shine and smoothness.

You may need to apply more polishing compound or switch to a finer compound, depending on the condition of the resin.

Once you’ve finished buffing, wipe the resin with a clean cloth to remove any residue or excess compound.
You can also apply a coat of wax or sealant to protect the surface and enhance the shine.

Tips and Tricks for Polishing Epoxy Resin

  • Always sand with progressively finer grits to avoid creating new scratches or damaging the resin.
  • Use a light touch when sanding and buffing, and avoid applying too much pressure or heat.
  • Try using a wet sanding technique to reduce dust and create a smoother surface.
  • Clean and dry the resin thoroughly before polishing to avoid any contamination or moisture.
  • Use a good-quality polishing compound and buffing wheel for best results.

Common Mistakes to Avoid While Polishing Epoxy Resin

While polishing epoxy resin is a relatively straightforward process, there are a few common mistakes that can result in an uneven or dull finish. Here are a few to avoid:

  • Using a low-quality polish that is not designed for use on epoxy resin.
  • Applying too much pressure while buffing, which can cause the polish to become uneven.
  • Working too quickly, without taking the time to ensure that each section is properly polished.
  • Skipping the cleaning step before polishing, which can result in a dull or uneven finish.

Maintenance and Care for Your Polished Epoxy Resin

Once you’ve achieved a flawless finish on your epoxy resin project, it’s important to take proper care of it to ensure that it stays looking its best. Here are a few tips for maintaining and caring for your polished epoxy resin:

  • Avoid exposing your epoxy resin to direct sunlight or heat, as this can cause it to fade or become discolored.
  • Use a soft cloth or microfiber towel to clean the surface of the epoxy resin regularly.
  • Apply a wax-based polish every few months to maintain the protective layer on the surface of the epoxy resin.
  • Avoid using abrasive cleaners or tools on your polished epoxy resin, as this can scratch or damage the surface.
